411 IDENTIFIED homeless student in the Lincoln County School District!

Thats not a typo, over 400 students are classified as homeless in Lincoln county.
25.8% of children in the county are living below the poverty line!
The graph below shows where homeless students are living:
What does it mean to be a homeless child (McKinney-Vento)

Sharing the housing of other persons, living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds , emergency or transitional shelters, abandoned in hospitals, awaiting foster care placement.
Nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations.

In laymen's terms, hundreds of children in Lincoln County are
living in conditions you wouldn't let your dog sleep in!

Project Homeless Connect October 7, 2010

Lincoln County’s 4th Annual Project Homeless Connect is in need of volunteers, says Lincoln Commission on Children and Families AmeriCorps VISTA  Lola Jones.
Project Homeless Connect, Thursday October 7 from ten o’clock to three o’clock, is a one stop shop that allows individuals and families to accomplish in one day what might normally take months in the social service system.
Approximately 200 people are expected to attend this year’s Project Homeless Connect, taking advantage of an expected 50 different agencies and organizations offering complimentary goods and services dealing with issues of housing, identification, food security, and health.
Volunteers are needed in a variety of capacities, including escorting homeless clients through the event to ensure their needs are met without overwhelming them. This human to human connection is an integral part of the experience, for both clients and volunteers. Other opportunities to volunteer include event set-up, registration, exit interviews, and meal service.
Those wishing to volunteer should contact Tamara Rosser at TRosser@ocwcog.org or visit homelessinlincolncounty.org and click on Volunteer Opportunities.

Sleeping bags needed for homeless during the winter! $12 can keep a person warm all winter!

http://www.newportnewstimes.com/v2_news_articles.php?heading=0&story_id=23992&page=79

Sleeping bags and other warming resources are essential to surviving the winter homeless on the Oregon coast, as nighttime temperatures can dip below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Sleeping bags can prevent discomfort, illness, even death during the chilly winter months.
Sleeping bags donated before October 7th will be distributed at Project Homeless Connect 2010 which serves aproximately 150 a year.
$12 cash donation can buy a sub zero temperature sleeping bag!

Hello World! I am now blogging!

This is the beginning of my blogging career! Bear with me please as I learn the finer points.

I began working for the Lincoln Commission on Children and Families on August 23, 2010 as an Americorps VISTA volunteer. I will serve the central Oregon coast homeless community through creation of sustainable outreach programs. http://www.newportnewstimes.com/v2_news_articles.php?heading=0&story_id=23957&page=79

My four key projects are:

Project Homeless Connect - one stop shop to connect homeless population with resources, accomplish in one day what could take months
211 Information Hotline - like a social service 911, 24/7 live help for people in need of information
Emergency Winter Warming Centers - short notice emergency shelter and food for homeless population
Homeless Education and Literacy Project - breaking down school related barriers for homeless students by provding them with resources and material goods

Look for updates and more info as I discover it!

Peace Love and Shelter for All!
Lola
